Modules

GStreamer is a large project, so it's split up into several modules. Most people need at least gstreamer, gst-plugins-base and gst-plugins-good to do anything useful.

Here's a quick overview of all of our modules :

Abandoned, deprecated and obsolete modules are listed on the legacy modules page.

  • core library and elements

    GStreamer

GStreamer is the core library. It contains the headers, core library files, and core elements.

  • an essential exemplary set of elements

    GStreamer Base Plug-ins

GStreamer Base Plug-ins is a well-groomed and well-maintained collection of GStreamer plug-ins and elements, spanning the range of possible types of elements one would want to write for GStreamer. It also contains helper libraries and base classes useful for writing elements. A wide range of video and audio decoders, encoders, and filters are included.

  • a set of good-quality plug-ins under our preferred license, LGPL

    GStreamer Good Plug-ins

GStreamer Good Plug-ins is a set of plug-ins that we consider to have good quality code, correct functionality, our preferred license (LGPL for the plug-in code, LGPL or LGPL-compatible for the supporting library).

  • a set of plug-ins that need more quality, testing or documentation

    GStreamer Bad Plug-ins

GStreamer Bad Plug-ins is a set of plug-ins that aren't up to par compared to the rest. They might be close to being good quality, but they're missing something - be it a good code review, some documentation, a set of tests, a real live maintainer, or some actual wide use.

  • a set of good-quality plug-ins that might pose distribution problems

    GStreamer Ugly Plug-ins

GStreamer Ugly Plug-ins is a set of plug-ins that have good quality and correct functionality, but distributing them might pose problems. The license on either the plug-ins or the supporting libraries might not be how we'd like. The code might be widely known to present patent problems.

  • FFmpeg-based plug-in containing many decoders and encoders

    GStreamer Libav plug-in

GStreamer Libav plug-in contains one plugin with a set of elements using the FFmpeg library code. It contains many popular decoders and encoders.

  • Plugins written in Rust

    GStreamer Rust Plug-ins

Plugins and elements written in the Rust programming language, such as WebRTC, HLS and fragmented MP4 support. They build on the Rust bindings, gstreamer-rs.

  • RTSP server

    GStreamer RTSP Server

RTSP server library based on GStreamer

  • editing services

    GStreamer Editing Services

    Library for creating audio/video editors.

  • Python support

    GStreamer Python Bindings Supplement

GStreamer Python overrides for the GObject introspection based bindings, used through PyGObject.

  • Rust bindings

    GStreamer Rust Bindings

Rust bindings for GStreamer and its libraries, published on crates.io. Used to write applications and plugins in Rust.

  • C#/.NET bindings

    GStreamer C# Bindings

    GStreamer C# bindings.

  • development and debugging tools

    GStreamer Development Tools

Development and debugging tools: GstValidate and its launcher, viewers for debug logs and pipeline graphs, and tracers.

  • example applications

    GStreamer Examples

Example applications for playback, network streaming, WebRTC and Vulkan.

  • documentation sources

    GStreamer Documentation

Source of the documentation: the manual, tutorials, FAQ and design documents.

  • integration test suites

    GStreamer Integration Test Suites

Media files and scenarios used by GstValidate for the integration tests.

  • Cerbero build system for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS

    Cerbero cross-platform build system

Build system to build GStreamer and all dependencies from source and create binary packages for Windows, Android, OS/X and iOS

  • Orc runtime compiler

Library of Optimized Inner Loops Runtime Compiler

Library and set of tools for compiling and executing SIMD assembly language-like programs that operate on arrays of data.
